This has been a tremendously busy season – our travel schedule in September – November took us to Phoenix, Tennessee, Dallas, India, Turkey, back to Phoenix, then four days of Board visits and meetings here in Colorado Springs with still one upcoming trip for me next week to Dallas for four days while David catches up at the office.
We are very excited about the opportunities for Entrust! We are meeting and developing relationships for potential partnerships, staff positions, and resourcing our ministries on many levels.
An exciting $20,000 match for first time gifts to the General Fund or for our Africa Project (MMD). No, the match does not include gifts to our personal support (see the column on the upper right of our blog homepage), but it is also a great need. Interested? Please call David at 847-971-6362!
India was very fruitful for the 13 staff on this fact finding mission. It is estimated that church growth outstrips the capacity of the seminaries to train Christian leaders in India by a million pastors (something we learned from our study before going—Breaking Tradition to Accomplish VISION—Gupta and Lingenfelter. To prepare us to conduct focus groups and meetings with area church leaders, we had extensive orientation and workshops. Then our team led Church Leadership Training over a two-day period, dividing the sixty men and women into small groups for more targeted instruction.
We heard so many stories of how God used suffering or persecution to transform their lives producing commitment for serving God and man. The cook for the conference owns a hotel, which he closed for three days in order to serve us... wow! Their examples make our “sacrifice” pale by comparison. The 20 women we met with remarked that this was the first time they had ever been given opportunity to have any kind of biblical education. Our team came back inspired and motivated to develop a systematic approach to training these leaders to train others over the next several years.
At an undisclosed location we had a dynamic time for 20 additional Entrust staff - study, worship, prayer and commitment to a serious vision for leaving behind movements of transformation where people experience all the glorious truth we celebrate at this time of Christmas!

Elesinah is one of the most remarkable women you will meet. Not only an exceptional example of a single woman overcoming a multitude of obstacles to earn her doctorate, but now making a huge Kingdom impact in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Chauke is addressing some of Africa’s most pressing social problems by equipping African church leaders to mobilize against the scourge of HIV and address the oppression of women in African culture.
More than a Mile Deep (MMD) is an accredited bachelor's degree program for church leadership to raise up a new generation of leaders for the rapidly growing church of Africa.
JOHN JUSU, MMD Curriculum Administrator
The injustice of having the chance to study in the US was one of the factors that took John on the unlikely path of from student radical to Christian champion of the downtrodden. As the best student in his Christian school, John thought he had earned the promised and much coveted scholarship to a college in the US when it was awarded to another classmate whose family enjoyed a higher status in the community. John rebelled against such hypocrisy, becoming a leader of a student radical movement. When all those under him we expelled, he realized his own folly and began a remarkable turnaround. The greatest surprise was that John ultimately would indeed study in the US, earning his Ph. D from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois.
In addition to being course architect and editor for MMD, John works at the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, having been contracted to teach Master’s Level courses in the educational studies department. John was the point man in securing accreditation for the institution and is the architect of the school’s extension studies program that is attracting hundreds of students. John is a founding member of the Christian Higher Education Faculty Development Network and also a founding member of the Consortium of Theological Education by Extension in Africa.
ELESINAH CHAUKE, Coordinator of MMD Course Production
Perhaps the course most talked about in MMD’s short history is a course written by Elesinah to help the church in Africa become all that God calls us to in a weary and hurt-filled world. Her preparation for the course, Pastoral Guidance and Counseling in HIV and Aids, was an emotional roller coaster as she researched the devastation and havoc caused by this epidemic. Yet churches across Africa are being given the sort of tools they need to bring hope to families devastated by the spread of this disease.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Elesinah is a direct product of missionary work. She received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at age fourteen in a classroom situation. At the age of eighteen she had a definite and clear calling to full-time ministry and ever since has been involved in church ministry in some way.
In 1976 she went to North America to continue studying at Spring Arbor University in Michigan, then on to Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, returning to Zimbabwe in 1982. She has taught Systematic Theology at the Evangelical Seminary of South Africa in Pietermaritizburg along with courses in New Testament and was also appointed Director of Student Affairs.
In August 2004 Elesinah joined MMD-South Africa as course producer and Coordinator of Women’s Ministry for MMD, plus other related responsibilities. In 2010, in response to the tremendous desire of several churches, she began facilitating MMD courses in Zimbabwe.
We look forward to seeing you!

Sometimes we feel totally inadequate . . .
. . . and certainly humbled by the people we are privileged to work with. What a joy to be part of this. Here are some quick glimpses.
— Dark, handsome and mature beyond his years . . . He was recounting a story as hair-raising as any novel, the difference being that the dangers were not fiction. Now, a highly esteemed Entrust staff trainer, he first came to us as a refugee fleeing for his life, leaving behind a prosperous business, his family and the world he knew only to find the transformation and new life only Christ can offer. Rather than chase after the immigrant’s dream of life in the West, he is pursuing his dream of a ministry of transformation to his own people (I am intentionally vague to protect him against the political realities of an anti-Christian government. The dangers remain for his family and the people who are flocking to Christ and meet for worship under penalty of death in his home country.)
— “This is a very intimidating group of women!” That was Nancy’s first thought as each person in the group introduced themselves. On her right a gifted counselor, on the left an accomplished ministry leader in a mega-church, next to her a seminary graduate . . . just to name a few. “Am I over my head taking on this training experience?” she wondered. That thought was soon forgotten as there developed an atmosphere of intimacy and mutual support as ten women and two facilitators examined their own walk with Christ while learning to facilitate the training process and help one other sharpen their skills -iron sharpening iron in the process of transformation Christ wants to lead us all through.
But Christ is More than Adequate . . .
— “Certainly, I was anxious!” It was my first time to address 120 multitalented and broadly experienced Entrust staff and stakeholders. Kind of like the opening tip off of a basketball game (way back when). There is something wrong if you don’t have that welcome feeling of adrenaline surging through your body. But it wasn’t all about speaking. In an atmosphere of worship, prayer and the study of God’s Word, we had meetings to problem solve and clarify vision. A multitude of conversations to ensure communication flow from the field to the home office. Times to encourage, times to listen, times to celebrate and commiserate. Sometimes counsel was needed. Then there was the traditional fun night where I was privileged to slick my hair back and with the bass part for a 50’s style group, The Monotones, singing “At the Hop!” It was exhilarating for us to see ourselves filling a role God had so obviously prepared us for.
“Wherever we go, Entrust wants to leave behind movements of transformation.”
What does that look like? Most of the time it is searching out how God is moving in a particular place and then strategically coming alongside the leaders to equip them and provide for them a means of multiplying themselves to equip others.
I am continually reminded that the role of a missionary has changed dramatically since the day my mother and father first went to Africa as pioneer missionaries. Now, more a partnership than ever before, in most places it is nationals who do the work of the ministry, but missionaries bring desperately needed training tools and capacity building. What makes Entrust distinctive is that we make the extra effort to understand the unique demands of each cultural context so we can develop tools that equip leaders to address those specific needs. That is how transformation happens.
Here are some examples:
Hostile locations: We still find ourselves working in stressful locations. Entrust began working behind the Iron Curtain. Today, as we spread across the world, we find that The Adversary is still trying to make things difficult for the church - yet Jesus’ promise to Peter still holds in that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against His church. Our refugee turned missionary is only one example. I recently led a team to India to initiate an exciting new partnership.
Targeting the state of Orissa, which was in the news not long ago because of the persecution of Christians, we anticipate 3000 converts in this next year alone. Entrust is partnering with over 100 indigenous ministries to train them in transformational ministry that brings community health education, cooperative financial principles, medical education and healing ministries to show Christ’s love to unreached villages. We are seeing movements of transformation taking place through these rapidly growing house churches. We are currently developing a biblical discipling process, for them, that is not dependent on print and can be fully utilized in that semi-literate, oral culture.
Endemic Poverty and HIV: Two huge challenges in Africa are a pervasive cycle of poverty and the scourge of HIV. Most pastor training programs, coming from the West, do not show how the Bible speaks to such issues. Entrust training not only shows how God’s Word addresses these issues, but requires students, while still in the course, to develop hands-on skills. Graduates will have real-world experience in confronting issues that enslave Christians along with others such as animism, oppression of women, etc.
Equipping Other Mission Organizations: There may be no better way for Entrust to multiply our impact for Christ than to equip missionaries from other mission organizations. Such as:
• Christian Missionary Alliance
• Barnabas
• Christian Reformed Mission
• East-West International Ministries
• GEM - Greater Europe Mission
• iAlethia,
• New Tribes
• Open Doors
• Operation Mobilization
• Pioneers
• SEND International
• SEND Canada
• Teach Beyond
• The Mission Source
• World Team
Women: For too long women have been a neglected resource for the church around the world. Nancy’s experience was part of this ministry where she serves on the leadership team. Entrust wants to multiply this transformational experience for women across the globe. These mission organizations come to us to learn how to equip women in a scalable manner by facilitating women to train other women. Entrust has refined this process over our 30 years of ministry and has learned how to adapt it in different cultural settings.
Men: We are responding to the growing need for Entrust to provide similar men’s training. We are shifting some of our resources to train other missions and strategically explore how to refine our tools and better equip men as lay leaders for the church in changing societies around the world. Recently, Entrust initiated men’s training for New Tribes missionaries, as well as for some leaders of the Centers for Church Based Training in Dallas. Together we seek God’s leading as to how we can partner for Kingdom ministry.
We will be in the Chicago area between July 24 – August 15 and we are eager to see you! We’ll call and let you know by email if there are any group gatherings – We are still scheduling these! - David & Nancy

Church-Based Training (CBT) & European Leadership Forum (ELF)
Currently, I am back in Europe to grow, connect, and seek partners!
I was In Vienna for about a week with several staff (all three of us led workshops and Liz Loeffler was also a plenary speaker) for the Church-Based Training Symposium.
Now I am in Eger, Hungary for six days at an annual European Leadership Forum with 600 others who are like-minded and serious about best practices and global trends in equipping church leaders for discipleship. I am serving as a Forum Resource Person, which is a small group leader, something I enjoy. I have been challenged by individual conversations, small groups, as well as presenters…all distinguished in that they have accepted God’s Call on their lives.

Os Guinness inspiring leaders with hope |
- “He’s got the whole world in his hands” The dominant emotion around the world is fear. Now we as followers of Jesus have no fear.
- “Our utmost for His highest.” We should each focus on our OWN calling. That is all we are responsible for. What a relief!
- “Let a thousand flowers bloom.” (attributed to Mao) Many of the generalizations we hear about Christianity today are discouraging, but many of the exceptions incredibly inspiring. Let us focus on those!
Eventually this will be uploaded so that anyone can hear the address. This is a treasure trove of some of the best speakers in the world all of whom pay their way to minister at this uniquely strategic conference. Check it out. http://welforum.com/course/view.php?id=90
Thank you for your prayers and for making it possible for us to accept God’s call on our lives for the Glory of God …
Blessings on you, David

All Staff Conference-Update
David told the staff, “This is my last big first!”
And in many ways, the recently completed All Staff Conference was probably the biggest of the “firsts” we have experienced since coming to Entrust. Over 120 staff members and guests gathered at a very reasonably priced seaside “resort”. We will be coy about the location for reasons detailed below, but you were more likely to hear German, Russian and Ukrainian before you heard English spoken among the busloads of tourists that we rubbed shoulders with.
It was a beautiful setting, if a bit cool, and provided some relaxation and recreation while the staff went through an ambitious week long schedule. This was “big” because gathering everyone together in one place tends to be a defining moment for the organization and this would be the first time we had the opportunity to address issues and answer questions with everyone present.

Some of our highlights:
Initiative. I sensed a dramatic shift away from speaking of ministry limitations to enthusiastic discussion of ministry possibilities.
Engagement. We have worked and prayed for unity around the direction of Entrust. There were dynamic conversations between staff and board from sunrise, way past sunset!
Finishing. In our last session, I challenged our staff to finish well. The baby boomers in our staff have had a great run, but they also hold the institutional knowledge accumulated in the last 30+ years and we need them to prepare the way for a whole new generation of “trainers of trainers.” I want our new recruits to be able to count on this wise counsel and support as they blaze new trails into new regions for the glory of Christ.
Family Fun Night "The Monotones" |
Team Building Exercise |
Women's Gathering |
- In-depth discussions of launching Men to Men Ministry Training. This is an exciting development with all sorts of implications for ministry at home and abroad.
- Positive response from staff on expansion into India and the Far East. There was a lot of interest in understanding the strategies and the implications for other new initiatives Entrust will undertake.
- Outstanding video production of regional updates and of staff providing reflective thinking on the conference themes. Our communications team worked long and hard to collect hours of video clips from the staff and distilled those into short presentations which had great impact in short bursts of time.
- Encouraging times of worship, prayer and interaction, enjoying the presence of the Lord! We had special prayer times for the staff of each region as well as times of prayer and reflection at both the beginning and end of each day.
Family Update
Sophie Lynn Goodman was born on 4-11-11 at 11:34 pm, 6 pounds, 9 ounces,19 ¼” Since we were in Turkey, we were very thankful for Skype video capabilities for staying in communication throughout the labor and delivery. We did get to visit them for three days early this month, after our return – Wonderful time of celebrating one of God’s incredible miracles. Sophie is already over a month old and has grown so much!

Welcome to our new blog!
“I believe the Bible alone is the answer to all our questions, and we need only to ask
repeatedly and a little humbly, in order to receive this answer. One cannot
simply read the Bible, like other books. One must be prepared to enquire of it.
Only thus will it reveal itself. Only if we expect from it the ultimate answer,
shall we receive it. That is because in the Bible God speaks to us . . . “
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dear Friends,
God does speak to us in His Word – and we are excited to see more opportunities for leadership training that is much more than simply “reading” the Bible.
Our 18 months with Entrust have pushed us to be better listeners as God speaks to us and to our staff, through His Word. We have pushed past the “new” from six months ago, to embrace what God is leading us to -- how He is opening opportunities for greater ministry, greater resources for current ministries, and new partnerships for effective Bible and leadership training initiatives.
Please peruse our blog and write back - we would love to hear from you! Please continue to pray – we depend on your prayer support as we hear God’s clear voice and rely upon His strength for the leadership of Entrust.
